Explanation of Tuition and Required Fees

Required fees must be paid by all students. Students are entitled to the services, facilities, and programs offered by the Student Center, Health Services, Physical Education Department, and Athletics Department.

Union Activities Board (UAB) – This fee of $.82 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $1.09 for Graduates, supports the UAB which is the main programming body for the campus which is responsible for acquiring, scheduling, publicizing, and presenting films, speakers, and special events.

Student Publications Fee – This fee of $1.09 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $1.46 for Graduates, is used to defray the cost of the various campus-wide student publications. At present, these include two student newspapers, a yearbook, a radio station, and “The Windover” (a literary magazine).

Student Government Fee – This fee of $.59 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $.79 for Graduates, is allocated to the Student Government for distribution to Campus organizations for activities that they deem are in the best interest of the student body.

Student Legal Services Fee – This fee of $.73 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $.97 for Graduates, funds the student legal services program which offers legal services to all students.

School (Student Association) Fee – This fee of $.21 for Undergraduates and $.94 for Graduate students is collected for use by the student associations in each of the colleges.

Student Center Operations – This fee of $6.52 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $8.69 for Graduates, supports the operations, activities, and programs offered by the University Student Center.

Student Center Repairs and Renovations – This fee of $1.99 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $2.66 for Graduates, is used to maintain and upgrade the Talley Student Center, Price Music Center, Witherspoon Student Center, and Thompson Theater.

Student Center Programming Fee (DASA, OIED) – This $10.03 fee for Undergraduates and $13.37 for Graduates supports programming for the Student Centers and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity.

Sustainability Education and Operations Fee – This fee of $.21 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $.28 for Graduates is used to promote sustainability and green ambassador efforts.

Recreational Sports Fee – This fee of $7.31 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $9.75 for Graduates, is used to defray the cost of operating and maintaining the intramural recreational sports program and other physical education programs.

Association of Student Governments – This fee of $.04 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $.06 for Graduates, is charged at all UNC institutions to help finance the Association of Student Governments, a coalition of student leaders from across the state, and is to be used for administrative staff, travel and small stipends for student leaders.

Campus Security Fee – This fee of $2.50 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $3.33 for Graduates is used to assist in campus-based and UNC system-wide safety and new security initiatives, staffing and security measures.

Intercollegiate Athletics Fee – This fee of $9.67 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $12.89 for Graduates, provides partial support of the intercollegiate athletic program.

Student Health Services Fee – This fee of $18.54 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $24.72 for Graduates, is used by the University Health Center to offer medical and counseling services to students.

Education and Technology Fee – This academic fee of $18.30 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $24.40 per credit hour for Graduates, used by colleges and schools to equip and operate computing and scientific laboratories that supplement classroom instruction.

Transit Operations Fee (Bus Service) – This fee of $8.71 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $11.61 for Graduates, partially funds the campus transit system.

Intercollegiate Athletics Indebtedness Fees – This fee of $4.00 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $5.33 for Graduates, is used for the Department of Athletics in support of facility improvements, renovations, repairs and maintenance.

Student Center – Expansion – This fee of $10.83 for Undergraduates and $14.44 for Graduates is pledged to support the renovation of the Student Center Buildings.

Carmichael Complex – Expansion – This fee of $1.15 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $1.53 for Graduates is pledged to support the Locker Room Renovation and Fitness Center Expansion.

Carmichael Complex Addition and Renovation – This fee of $3.85 per credit hour for Undergraduates and $5.14 for Graduates is pledged to retire debt issued for the Carmichael Gymnasium Addition and Renovation.

On-Campus Other Fees

College of Engineering Program Enhancement Fee – This fee is an additional fee that is not included in the regular tuition and fees rate. Students enrolled in the College of Engineering (including the BE, BEA, BEE, BEM, BAE, BEP, TE and PSE) are charged $62.50 per credit hour for undergraduates and $83.33 per credit hour for graduates.

Late Registration Fee – The late registration fee is $35.00. Late registration for Summer Session I starts on April 18, 2024 and ends May 17, 2024 at 5:00 pm. For Summer Session II, it begins May 28, 2024 and ends June 26, 2024. The “late, late” registration fee is $100.00 and “late, late” registration begins on May 18, 2024 for Summer Session I and June 27, 2024 for Summer Session II.

Fees Explanation

  • Education and Technology Fee – This academic fee is used by colleges and schools to equip and operate computing and scientific laboratories which supplement classroom instruction.
  • Association of Student Governments – This fee is charged at all UNC institutions to help finance the Association of Student Governments, a coalition of student leaders from across the state, and is to be used for administrative staff, travel and small stipends for student leaders.
  • Campus Security Fee – This fee is used to assist in campus-based and UNC system-wide safety and new security initiatives, staffing and security measures.
  • COE Program Enhancement Fee – Engineering students also pay an EOS fee for the following additional resources:
    • 20+ engineering-only EOS labs
    • Specialty engineering software
    • Help Desk services
    • Remote-access services
    • Student-owned computing infrastructure
    • Services from Information Technology and Engineering Computer Services (ITECS)
