CODA Requirements: College of Design
Requirements and preferred qualifications to transfer (as a current NC State student) into specific College of Design majors are listed below. This includes students who desire to change their major, as well as those who want to add a College of Design major.

College of Design Requirements
Students must meet the listed “Minimum Requirements” in order to submit an online CODA application to transfer (see CODA Application). These requirements must be complete at the time the application is submitted. Candidates who meet the preferred qualifications outlined below have a higher probability of being approved for transfer. All admission is competitive and based on space availability in the specific program. Meeting the preferred qualifications does not guarantee admission to the desired major.

Design Studies (BA) – Non-Studio Based
Application Deadlines:
- September 15
- February 1
- May 15
- July 1
Minimum to apply and be considered:
- Completion of 15 or more NC State graded credit hours
- Cumulative GPA must be > or = 2.0
- Completion of ENG 101 (B- or better)
Preference will be given to students who meet the following:
- Cumulative GPA of > or = 3.0, and
- Completion of one HI course (B- or better)
- Completion of COM 110 (B- or better)
Architecture (BEDA), Art + Design, Graphic Design and Industrial Design – Studio Based
Students interested in transferring to College of Design “studio” majors (Architecture, Art + Design, Graphic Design and Industrial Design) must submit an electronic application (CODA) and the required portfolio and essay by November 1 (application is available beginning September 16). Applicants are reviewed annually for admission for the following fall semester. Students will be notified regarding decisions from this first “phase” of the admissions process by the end of December. Approval at this phase will get students invited to the “interview phase” which occurs in January. Final decisions for admission will be reported by early March.
Application Timeline:
- Nov 1: Application Due for Studio-Based Majors (Including Portfolio and Design Essay for Studio-Based Majors)
- Late Feb: Decision Notification
- May 1: Deadline to Accept Admissions to College of Design
Minimum to apply and be considered:
- Submission of portfolio – Enter the URL to your portfolio website in the CODA Application – in the box along with the required essay
- Submission of required essay – For all studio based programs, enter your response in the CODA application to the following essay prompt:
- In 500 words or less discuss one project in your portfolio that best reflects your current understanding of design. Consider how it might be received or used by someone other than yourself.
Preference will be given to students who meet the following:
- Completion or current enrollment in 15 or more NC State graded credit hours
- Cumulative GPA of > or = 3.0, and
- Competitive essay review
- An essay will be included as part of your electronic CODA Application. See the essay prompt in the “Submission of Required Essay” section above.
- Enter the essay response in the same box as the URL to your portfolio
- Competitive portfolio review
- Enter the URL to your portfolio website in the CODA Application – in the box along with the required essay
