CODA Requirements: College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Requirements and preferred qualifications to transfer (as a current NC State student) into specific College of Humanities and Social Sciences majors are listed below. This includes students who wish to change their major, as well as those who want to add a Humanities and Social Sciences major.

College CODA Requirements

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Requirements

Students must meet the listed “Minimum Requirements” in order to submit an online CODA application to transfer (see CODA Application).  These requirements must be complete at the time the application is submitted. Candidates who meet the preferred qualifications outlined below have a higher probability of being approved for transfer.  All admission is competitive and based on space availability in the specific program. Meeting the preferred qualifications does not guarantee admission to the desired major.

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better, or
  • Completion of ENG 101 with grade of B- or better, and
  • Completion of COM 200, and
  • Completion of 3 additional hours in COM at the 200-level or higher, and
  • Cumulative GPA in all COM courses of 2.5 or better

Note: COM 200 is designed specifically as an entry-point class for internal transfers, providing them with 3 hours at the 200-level. For internal transfers, COM 200 currently replaces COM 250 as a degree requirement.

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 2.5 or better, AND completion of one ENG course beyond ENG 101 with grade of B- or better, or
  • GPA of 2.0 or better, AND two ENG courses beyond ENG 101 with grades of B- or better

Students typically complete their expected English course(s) from the corresponding list below to enter one of the six specific concentrations in English:

  • Creative Writing: ENG 281, 287, 288, 289
  • Rhetoric and Professional Writing: ENG 214, 316, 323, 314
  • Film: ENG 282
  • Linguistics: ENG 210, 315, 324, 326, 327, 329 or SOC 207
  • Literature: ENG 207, 208, 209, 232, 233, 246, 248, 251, 252, 261, 262, 265, 266, 267, 305
  • Teacher Education: ENG 210, 221, 222, 223, 224, 251, 252, 261, 262, 265, 266, 267

(Note: Graduation requirements specify that students are not allowed to take more than five (5) 200-level English classes.)

  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of B or better, and
  • Completion of FL* 102 or higher (e.g. FLA 102, FLC 201, FLG 212) with a grade of B or better in the language of your intended major concentration

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of B or better, and
  • Completion of FL* 201 and FL* 202 with a grade B- or better

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better, or
  • GPA of 2.5 or better, AND one HI course with grade of B- or better, or
  • GPA 2.0 or better, AND two HI courses with grades of B- or better

Minimum to apply and be considered for all programs in this academic unit:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

 ARTS STUDIES

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of one course in their intended foundational art area with a grade of B- or better, from the following list:
    • Visual – ARC 140, 261, 441, 442; ADN 414; GD 203, 303; HA 201, 202, 203, 298, 320, 395, 401, 404; LAR 423, 444;
    • Music – MUS 103, 201, 202, 203, 230, 260, 306, 310, 315, 320, 330, 335, 340, 345, 350, 351, 360, 495;
    • Theatre – ENG 206; THE 103, 203, 223;
    • Film – ENG 282

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (DEGREE PROGRAM)

Africana Studies or Africana Studies Community Studies Concentrations 
  • Preference will be given to students who meet the following: Completion of two of the following AFS courses with grades of B- or better in each: AFS 240, 241, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 442, 490, 491, 497.
Self-Design Concentration
  • Students must complete a formal application process. Check the program’s website for details here.
Women’s and Gender Studies
  • Preference will be given to students who meet the following: Completion of WGS 200 or 210 with a grade of B- or better

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of IS 200 with a grade of B- or better, and
  • Making satisfactory progress toward meeting the International Studies foreign language requirement (Graduation requirements for International Studies students includes completion or proficiency through the FL3** level)

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of at least one STS or IDS prefix course with a B- or better

Minimum to apply and be considered for all programs in this department:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

PHILOSOPHY

  • Completion of a PHI course with a grade of B- or better

RELIGIOUS STUDIES

  • Completion of a REL course with a grade of B- or better

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of 6 credit hours of PS coursework at the 200-level or above with grades of B- or better

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or better
  • B- or better in PSY 200 (AP or Transfer Credit will equally be considered)

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

Note: Candidates who meet the Preferred Qualifications outlined below have a higher probability of being approved for transfer. All admission is competitive and based on academic record and space availability in the department. Meeting the preferred qualifications does not guarantee admission.

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better
  • B- or better in PSY 230
  • B- or better in one of the following courses: BIO 105/ 106 or BIO 181 or BIO 183 or MA 107 or MA 111 or MA 114 or MA 121 or MA 131 or MA 141
  • B- or better in ENG 101 or ENG1GEP
  • For all classes listed above, AP credits or transfer course work will be equally considered.

Minimum to apply and be considered:

  • Completion of 12 or more NC State graded credit hours
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or better

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Completion of SW 201 OR SW 290 with a grade of B- or better

ANTHROPOLOGY MAJOR

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better, or
  • GPA of 2.5 or better, AND completion of one ANT course (ANT 251, 252, 253, 254) with grade of B- or better

CRIMINOLOGY MAJOR

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better, or
  • GPA of 2.5 or better, AND completion of SOC 202 with grade of B- or better, AND completion of SOC 206 or SOC 306 with grade of B- or better

SOCIOLOGY MAJOR

Preference will be given to students who meet the following:

  • Cumulative NC State GPA of 3.0 or better, or
  • GPA of 2.5 or better, AND completion of SOC 202 with grade of B- or better
